Doreen Clark Nature Reserve

The Doreen Clark Nature Reserve is situated a short distance north of Pietermaritzburg, in the mist belt area between Hilton and Winterskloof. The small seven hectare reserve which consists largely of an area of mixed mist belt podocarpus forest with some grassland running along its edges, was donated to the Old Natal parks board by the Clark family. The small mist belt forest reserve has a number of picnic spots and hiking trails which are rated as easy in difficulty, and suitable for all ages.

The Doreen Clark Nature reserve provides keen bird watchers with an excellent opportunity to view a number of mist belt forest birds which include African Emerald Cuckoo, Narina Trogon, Olive Woodpecker, White-starred Robin, Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler, Collared Sunbird and Forest Canary and a number of others. African Crowned Eagle are regular visitors to the reserve, and in summer visitors can look forward to spotting five different species of cuckoo.
