Basani Art and Craft Centre

The Basani Art and Craft Centre located in Hyslop Rd in Pietermaritzburg provides visitors with the opportunity to meet, and purchase various artworks directly from local Zulu artists who work daily in the centre's "Work In Progress Gallery". The centre serves a central base for young Zulu artists to meet and to work. The Basani Art and Craft Centre currently features three resident artists which include the talented youngster Siyabonga Sikhosana as well as Shokwakhe Mngadi and Mthokozizi Myeza. Artists at the centre regularly undertake commissioned work for visitors, producing awesome paintings, wirework, ceramics and textile creations.

The Craft Shop at the Basani Art and Craft Centre stocks a selection of craft from KZN and Africa, and also features a representative collection of pots from KZN, such as those made by celebrated and skillful Magwaza and Nala families of northern KwaZulu-Natal. The centre also features a coffee shop which serves light refreshments.

The Basani Art and Craft Centre is open daily from 9:00-17:00 except Mondays, and on Saturdays hosts the Basani African Art Market which runs every Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm. There is also a resource library at Basani. Phone (033) 342 3697 or 076 307 5400 or e-mail betna@mweb.co.za.
