Zuurberg - Addo Elephant National Park

The former Zuurberg National Park is now part of the Greater Addo Elephant Park. This mountainous region is characterized by steep wooded ravines with patches of fynbos sugarbush, and cycads.

Zuurberg is best explored on foot via the many hiking trails that traverse the reserve. Mammals that inhabit this area include hippo, zebra, kudu, baboon, various small antelope, caracal, jackals, and the occasional leopard.

The Melkhoutboom Cave, located in the Suurberg Mountains, is a stone age archaeological site dating back 15,000 years. Nearby rock paintings in the Suurberge confirm that this area was inhabited by San hunter/gatherers. Plant remains found in the cave, well-preserved by the dry climate, give archaeologists a glimpse into the world that existed here in prehistoric times. Many human skeletons have been excavated near the Zuurberg Hotel, some more than 7,000 years old.

The Addo Elephant Back Safaris is also located in the Zuurberg Mountains, offering visitors a unique opportunity to get close-up and personal with these magnificent creatures.

The area can be reached by heading up the R335 from Port Elizabeth, past Addo Park turnoff and continuing north towards the Suurberg Pass.
