Weza-Ngele Forest Nature Reserve

The Weza-Ngele Forest is located between the towns of Harding and Kokstad in KwaZulu Natal, and is considered as one of the largest and most easily accessible expanses of Afromontane mistbelt forest in the province. These high altitude forests grow much taller than coastal forests, and are characterised by massive yellowwood trees. The Weza-Ngele Forest is located 80 km inland from the coast, and the altitude the area varies between 1250 and 1550 m above sea level.

Weza-Ngele Forest Hiking Trails
The forest features a good system of trails which allow visitor access to large parts of it. The Narina Trogon Trail alternates between indigenous forest, pine plantations and grassland taking visitors over a distance of just under three and a half kilometers in a one hour circular route. The Glen Ives trail starts with a steep climb taking hikers through the forest to a fire lookout point. From there the route travels along the upper
edge of the forest, providing magnificent views of the mosaic of timber plantations below as well as indigenous forests and grasslands. A dominant feature of the scenery to the south west is the two thousand two hundred and 68m high Ngele peak. The return leg of this route is mainly through the forest. This circular trail takes about three hours to complete, and covers a distance of nine kilometers. The Ngelipoort trail winds through the Ngele Forest at first, and then cuts through the Ngelipoort pine plantation. The trail then curves through grassland along the slopes of Ngele Mountain.

Birding at Weza-Ngele
The forest serves as a perfect location for bird watching, and has become home to the rare and elusive Cape Parrot, which prefer misty mountainous forest habitats. A massive variety of other bird species can also be found within the Weza-Ngele Forest, and these include Orange Ground Thrush, African Emerald Cuckoo, Grey Cuckooshrike, Swee Waxbill, both Trumpeter Hornbill and Crowned Hornbill and Cape Batis to name a few.

The Weza-Ngele Forest Nature Reserve, also offers horse riding and mountain biking trails and trout dams for fly fishing.
