The Fort Nottingham Highland Games and Festival are held annually on the
grounds of Fort Nottingham in the green hills of the Natal Midlands. The fort is
located about eight kilometers from the village, and the connecting field
provide an excellent location for the gathering, because it allows for separate
events to be held on different fields.
The festival features a wide variety of activities which are typically found at
traditional Scottish gatherings like the well known Braemar games, and include
traditional Scottish events such as the Tossing the Caber (a 45kg log), Putting
the Stone(26kg), Throwing the Hammer, Tug of War competitions, the Dunsmore
Challenge, Highland Dancing and a number of food stalls and exhibits. Other
entertainment featured at the event includes gumboot dancing, a dog display, and
whisky tasting in the old fort's barracks.
The village of Nottingham Road, which surrounds the fort, provides ample safe
parking for over one thousand vehicles, and the area is conveniently marked with
signs, which lead visitors easily to the village. A shuttle service from the
parking area to the fields is also available. Due to the location of the
village, visitors can also take a detour to the famous Midlands Meander Arts and
crafts route, which allows them to view and purchase anything from handmade
leather goods, to furniture and various food items. For more information contact event organiser Brendan Grealy – email brendan@corriecampbell.co.za or 0832272376
