Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg, is a tranquil and scenic venue on the
banks of the Umsunduzi River where the annual Art in the Park event is held.
Planning and preparations for the event is extensive, and the park is
transformed from its everyday appearance, into a magical open air art gallery.
Due to the unique appeal of the event, it has gained massive popularity over the
years, and has become one of the top selling outdoor art exhibitions in South
Africa.
As always, Art in the Park provides visitors with a truly interesting and richly
diverse blend of mediums, which range from all aspects of painting, to
photography, glassworks and a variety of less traditional mediums. Works entered
into the event, are put through a strict selection process, and a strong focus
on quality art is observed, which helps to define the success of the exhibition,
which has gained sponsorship through Nashua in recent years. A developmental
component, which was introduced in 2002 is reaping its own benefits, with a
various emerging talents graduating into fully fledged exhibitors in their own
right.
The reputation of the event has drawn an increased number of artists from all
over South Africa, who scramble to be included into it, but due to the ever
growing popularity, the panel of selectors has had to turn many artists away.
The annual event selects the top twenty best selling artists from the previous
year for automatic entry each year. Topping the list are well known Free state
landscape artist Kobus Kotze, renowned Pietermaritzburg painter Mat Louwrens,
Eastern Free State artists Simon Addy and Lyn Hoyle, and young south African
artist, photographer and conservationist Leon Fouche.
It is not only the fantastic quality of art on display at Nashua's Art In The
Park, which draws in the crowds, but the magical atmosphere of the event, which
plays an important role in making it a must see event on the national exhibition
circuit. In this respect, the founding values of Nashua Art in the Park remain
very much intact. The high spirited friendliness around evening fires, and the
warm glow of sherry, not to mention the excellent catering and exciting
entertainment line up, have made Nashua Art in Park a truly landmark event.
