Tatham Art Gallery

The Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg attracts both art connoisseur and curious browsers alike with its interesting and varying selection of beadwork, basketry, oil paintings and linocuts.

The gallery was established in 1903 by Mrs. Ada Susan Tatham, who obtained donations and went on to purchase various works in Britain later the same year. After an initial exhibition, the collection was first displayed at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. In 1923 the collection was upgraded significantly through various donations made by Colonel R.H Whitwell.

The collection at the Tatham Gallery consists of significant French and British art pieces dating back as far as the eighteenth century. Also featured is a South African collection which focuses largely on the art of KwaZulu Natal. A variety of both British and French masterpieces from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are well represented.
