Pongola, Magudu, Lake Jozini / Pongolapoort Dam

Picturesque Pongolapoort is situated in the Lebombo Mountain Range of North Zululand on the northern shores of the Pongolapoort Dam fed by the Pongola River. Built in 1972 to supply irrigation for the crops growing in the area, the dam, also known as Lake Jozini, has become a popular fishing destination.

"Phongolo" is a Zulu word meaning "trough" which aptly describes the Pongola River, with its steep banks and deep pools as it finds its way coast wards through the mountains. The dense indigenous vegetation, coupled with its remote location and abundant water supply has resulted in the creation of the Pongolapoort Biosphere and Nature Reserve.

With very little sign of human habitation Pongolapoort is a genuine wilderness of untouched beauty. Hippos, crocodiles and numerous species of aquatic birds have made the dam their home, while the mountain slopes provide an ideal habitat for both small and large game.

Well stocked with many species of fish, including the cunning tiger fish which has challenged many an expert fisherman, Pongolapoort is the venue for a number of fishing tournaments throughout the year, including the Tiger Fishing Tournament held every October.
