Biggarsberg is the name given to a range of hills running from north-west to south-east between the Natal village of Glencoe, which was originally named Biggasberg Junction, and Ladysmith.
Alexander Biggar, who acted as a guide for the British Commando on their way to the Battle of Blood River, overturned his scotchcart when he hit a submerged pothole while fording a stream in the hills. He struck such a comic figure that his comrades named the hills Biggarsberg.
The Biggarsberg bore silent witness to the discovery of coal and the subsequent growth of the settlement of Dundee mushrooming in its foothills.
A natural barrier between Dundee and Ladysmith in the midst of the Natal Batttlefields Route, The Biggarsberg range of Hills provide shelter, protection and nourishment and extends this to the visitors to the battlefields, drawn here from all over the world.
Trailists embarking on the Oribi Trail begin their journey from a point just outside Wasbank, a small town snuggled up on the slopes of the Biggarsberg. Unlike the warriors and soldiers who trekked here before them, they can enjoy the abundant bird life and game and unlock the ancient secrets of the Biggarsberg at their leisure.
