The small village of Mooihoek is situated just a few kilometres to the southwest of Winterton. The village is dominated by the 3377m high Champagne Castle peak in the South and by Cathedral Peak State Forest in the west. This is an excellent staging post for climbers, hikers and others seeking to access the majestic mountains in the area.

In the heart of the area is the Mdelelelo Wilderness Area, a wild area of nearly 30000 hectares that includes the spectacular Ndedema Gorge and houses nearly 150 rock shelters where there are numerous bushman paintings. There is an abundance of bird life as well as many species of antelope and buck in this area, one of the last areas of Southern Africa to be penetrated by the white man. This is an area of gentle streams, cascades and spectacular waterfalls surrounded by deep dark forests.
