Welgevonden

Welgevonden is a private game reserve situated some 40 kilometres to the North of Pretoria just to the side of the N1 highway. It is some 15 kilometres from the Rust der Winter Dam and Nature Reserve. The Rust der Winter Dam is mostly used by anglers and water sports enthusiasts even though there are crocodiles in the dam. Welgevonden is virtually on the border between Gauteng and Limpopo and there is some argument over which of the Provinces is its mother. The Welgevonden Game Reserve is one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa, covering 37 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the malaria-free Waterberg region. The Big Five are home in the region of the Welgevonden Game Reserve. Furthermore rhinos, elephants, buffalo, zebras, antelopes, as well as leopard, lion, hyena can be found here.

From an original pride of five lions, at least 22 now roam freely within the reserve's boundaries. Just under 50 elephants were originally released into the reserve and 85 now reside in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.
