Pretoria North is one of the oldest suburbs of Pretoria and is situated to the North of the kopje that separates the town. To the North of the suburb lies the Onderstepoort Research Station set in the magnificent grounds of the Bon Accord Dam. The suburb is within easy reach of the Military Base and the Airport at Wonderboom, just a few blocks to the north-east. A short drive to the South brings you to the centre of the city - the Opera House, Union Buildings and a great number of Embassies and Consulates. Pretoria itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. During the First Boer War, the city was besieged by Republican forces in December 1880 and March 1881. The peace treaty, which ended the war, was signed in Pretoria on 3rd August 1881 at the Pretoria Convention. Pretoria achieved official city status in 1931. |
