Kroonstad

Named for Kroon, a horse belonging to Voortrekker leader, Sarel Celliers, Kroonstad was founded in 1855 and is reputed to be one of the Free State's most beautiful towns.

Situated on the banks of the willow lined Vals River approximately 200 kilometres from Johannesburg along the N1, it is a convenient and popular destination for those looking for a weekend getaway in the country, Kroonstad is the centre of a rich agricultural district, producing maize, wheat, dairy and meat products and wool.

Fans of architect sir Hubert Baker have a wonderful opportunity to view the many buildings he designed for Kroonstad, among them the Post Office, the City Hall and The Standard Bank Building. Other equally lovely old buildings adorn Kroonstad's streets, making for a picturesque amble through the town.

Leisure opportunities are plentiful in Kroonstad, where visitors can enjoy golf on the 18 hole course in the town, game drives and hunting in the Boskoppie game reserve, fishing in the well stocked Vals River or on the Bloemhok Dam, and boating on the Serfontein Dam. Horse riding, gliding and Hiking Trails are also available.

Accommodation is plentiful. both in the town and in the surrounding farming area.
