Whether you are a nature lover, a fisherman or just feel like lazing about - St. Lucia offers a great experience for the eco-tourist, fisherman and holiday maker alike. The greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park is a World Heritage Site and unquestionably one of the World's greatest destinations. This area is recognized as a wetland site of international significance incorporating the following five fully independent functioning systems that are totally integrated with each other:
  • The Marine System - coral reefs, rocky and sandy beaches.
  • The Eastern Shores - barrier between lake and sea.
  • The Mkuze Swamps - pans and papyrus.
  • The Lake - the largest estuary in Africa.
In this tranquil awe-inspiring setting you can view the unsurpassed birdlife. The picturesque village of St. Lucia is unique in that it is situated within the oldest Nature Reserve in South Africa and next to Lake St. Lucia, the largest estuarine lake system in Africa that hosts the largest single population of Hippo. Mapelane, the 2nd largest sand dune in the world, standing some 184 meters high is also close by.

The St. Lucia Marine Reserve stretches from 1km south of Cape Vidal to 11km north of Maputo Marine reserve, an underwater wonderland containing some of the southernmost coral reefs in the world.

What to do in St. Lucia
St. Lucia provides access to Cape Vidal and the Mziki trail and is a good starting point for the Umfolozi, Hluhluwe and Mkuze Game Reserves. St. Lucia offers an endless wealth of possibilities, which includes sunbathing, walking on pristine beaches and snorkeling in clear warm water at Cape Vidal. Nature lovers can indulge themselves with walks along the many hiking trails where a variety of game and birds can be viewed.

A trip on a passenger ferry on the St. Lucia estuary can be taken to see the hippo's, numerous Nile crocodiles basking in the hot African Sun as well as bird life. One can also indulge in deep sea fishing, watching the Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales on route to Mozambique (July to November), watching dolphins and sharks or taking a game reserve tour to see the Big Five or a turtle tour (November to February). Night drives can also be taken in the St. Lucia Wetland Park in search of nocturnal activities.
