Gouritsmond, formerly known as The Fisheries, is renowned for the good catches of fish, especially kabeljou. The three largest kabeljou ever caught were landed here. In 2004 a kabeljou weighing 50kg was caught in the river, and the previous year one of 62kg. Access to the river for fishing boats as well as ski-boats is via a launching site. Fishing charters for the river or deep sea
are available on request. The rugged coastline offers numerous ideal spots for shore angling, snorkel diving and spear fishing.
The kilometer long beach is ideal for swimming, surfing, sun tanning or just strolling to the river mouth. Various species of fynbos (indigenous shrubs unique to the Cape, including the famous Protea-family), kiewiete (Cape plover), the endangered black oyster catcher and many more can be admired. If you are fond of hiking, you will enjoy the unique coastal walking trail from Mossel Bay (through Gouritsmond) to Rein's Nature Reserve. For the nature lover a visit to Rein's (only 18 km from Gouritsmond) will be an unforgettable experience. (Ancient Khoi San fish traps, ostrich touch farm, guided mountain biking, star gazing, snorkeling, rubber ducking, etc.).
But there is more to enjoy in the vicinity. Sweet Heart can watch Brave Heart bungee jumping from the nearby Gourits River bridge. From there you can go to Mossel Bay for a boat trip around Seal Island, or a visit to the famous Post Tree, the maritime museum or the shell museum. You can try your luck at one of the casinos or enjoy a game of golf. For the more adventurous a ride on the back of an ostrich at Knysna are places not to be missed. They are amongst the most beautiful in the whole of South Africa. (Gouritsmond to Mossel Bay: 45km; to Oudtshoorn: 140km; to George International Airport: 80 km).
