The place of unexpected pleasure is the last stop on the South Coast. It is
ideally situated on the banks of the Umtavuna River and is surrounded by
ruggedly beautiful Umtavuna Nature Reserve, lush banana plantations and sugar
cane farms, and the shops and art galleries are dotted around this fascinating
little town.
Go for an energetic hike in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which contains many
rare plants and is home to a colony of vultures. There are 4x4 trails and a
mountain bike try leisure trip up the Umtavuna lagoon.
Visit the North Sands Bluff Lighthouse for a spectacular ocean views, and brows
in the maritime museum which provides fascinating insights into the history,
including the last days of the stricken Portuguese sailing ship, the Sao Juao
which ran aground of Port Edward in 1952. It was returning from the East laden
with beads, Ming porcelain, money cowries and spices. And remnants of the
treasure will wash up on on the beaches.
Port Edward beach 5 minutes by car and provide excellent swimming and include a
popular ski boat launch. This is a famous fishing destination, both deep sea and
of the rocks. Across the river are the Wild Coast Casino, and the award winning
Wild Coast Golf course. Here the beaches stretch forever and horse riding on the
beach is of the best.
Then after a day full of events retire on the veranda overlooking the CH
Mitchell Bridge. The largest steel suspension bridge in South Africa built in
1976 the main access route between KZN and the Eastern Cape The bridge span is
206m, which is 30m above water level.
