What makes Die Tolhuis unique is that it is nestled in the picturesque
Kogmanskloof on the renowned tourist route R62. We are surrounded by natural
beauty: mountains with spectacular views of the geological Langeberg mountain
folds, Aasvoelkrans and the sheer crevasses of Kalkoennes; the Thomas Bain's
tunnel through Kalkoenkrans which was completed in 1877 and was an engineering
feat for its time; the Kogmanskloof river that snakes past the property meets
the Breede river, giving life to the winelands in its wake. Well-known rock
climbing areas, Bosch Crag and Legoland are within three minute walking distance
from Die Tolhuis. Alternatively, guests can spend time watching birds or just
relaxing with a good book. Because we are surrounded by mountains, we are shaded
from the glare of city lights, making us an ideal location to view the night
sky. Access to Die Tolhuis is via a gate located on the R62 (33°48.828'S
20°05.416'E)
HISTORY
Our name "Die Tolhuis" has its origin in the fascinating history of the
property. In 1860 three morgen of land was granted to Jan Daniel de Pasquale who
built a tollhouse and became the first toll collector. De Pasquale was born on
the island of Sicily and was a member of the British regiment who guarded
Napoleon while imprisoned on St Helena. Colin Johnson the current owner is a
direct descendant of de Pasqual.
ACTIVITIES
Die Tolhuis offers its guests a tranquil and peaceful setting to relax and an
opportunity to reconnect with nature. The bubbly splash pools of the
Cogmansriver are ideal for fishing or a glorious playground for kids.
Alternatively explore the mountain Fynbos, take a walk to the English Fort and
Aasvoelkrans. For the energetic visitor one can cycle from Die Tolhuis to
Montagu and back (10km) or collect your climbing gear and do abseiling for which
the area is renowned.
There are a wide range and mixed bag of tourist attractions in the area. A visit
to the village of Montagu (5km) that sits quietly at the foot of the mountains
with its white washed thatched houses and wide empty streets should be included
in your activities. This is where you can visit the Montagu market, museums and
do a historic walk of the town.
A perfect day would be a scenic drive to
Barrydale (70km), then over the
spectacular Tradouw Pass and a visit to the idyllic and historic fertile
village of Zuurbraak, then proceed to the tranquility of
Swellendam where you
should visit the Faerie Sanctuary. Complete the roundtrip and proceed to Die
Tolhuis by following R60 to
Ashton.
From Die Tolhuis you have the opportunity to go and enjoy wine tasting at well
known cellars or visit Birds Paradise, all within a radius of 30km.
The Breede River area is renowned for activities (tractor ride, Breede river
