Die Pondokkie Guesthouse is located in the quiet Karoo town of Hofmeyr, on
the popular R390 route between Gauteng/OFS and Port Elizabeth/Jefferies Bay (800
km from Jhb, 320 km from PE and 63 km from Cradock). The property is two blocks
off the main road through Hofmeyr, so guests are not bothered by the noise of
heavy trucks driving through / parking in the main road. With only the main road
through town being tarred, the gravel streets of the residential area adds to
the tranquility of a tree and bird rich country town.
The guesthouse offers a private home from home with three double rooms (two
en-suite and one separate bath room). It is ideal for a family with children
since guests have the entire house for their comfort and privacy (your hosts
live just across the guesthouse). With a fully enclosed garden there is space
for children to safely play as they wish. All beds are equipped with mosquito
nets, with electric bed warmers for those chilly Karoo winter nights.
The guesthouse offers a fully equipped kitchen to meet any food maker’s needs.
Braai facilities are also available. The large lounge / dining room has a TV
with SABC channels (via a DSTV decoder, so guests are welcome to bring along
their own DSTV smart cards). The lounge has a two-sleeper couch and together
with a luxury double bedded caravan, Die Pondokkie can accommodate a family or
group of friends of up to 10 people. A separate breakfast room seats 8 people.
Safe parking is offered in a lock-up garage with alarm and additional parking is
available on the premises. Toilet friendly pets are most welcome to enjoy the
run of a fully fenced garden.
For those who don’t fancy catering for themselves, a huge English breakfast or a
lighter Continental breakfast can be served on request. Please note that Hofmeyr
has no restaurants and only limited take away facilities.
The third double bed room with en-suite bath room is separate from the main
house. A luxury caravan, with double bed, dining area, gas stove, micro wave
oven and crockery is parked at the entrance to this room. Used in combination,
this offers a nice “outdoor” facility for those who wish to spend the night in a
camping atmosphere without the normal “city luxuries”.
Activities
Hofmeyr is the ideal town just to chill after a long journey, but the town’s
quietness belies some interesting sightseeing.
The majestic Gariep Dam and outlet of the Orange / Fish River Tunnel is a mere
150 km away and warrants a day trip. A Lion breeding farm is some 35 km away,
and a drive past the farm might be rewarded by sighting some Lions.
Good gravel roads surrounding the town offer some of the most beautiful Karoo
landscapes, where massive herds of Springbok can be seen. On a clear night the
sight of stars will leave many a city dweller breathless.
