Designed and developed by the German photographer Dr Guido Schoeldgen and his wife Annette, Days at Sea became an epitome of peace, art and lifestyle. They were looking for an "all over the year" beach retreat in South Africa with a warm ocean, sandy beaches and a malaria free subtropical nature as a contrast to Cape Town's busy city life and the ice-cold Atlantic.
After finishing architectural masterpieces in Germany, Ibiza / Spain and Cape Town, it took them nearly two years to finish the exiting Day at Sea Beach Lodge. The Lodge opened only in November 2008 and was 5 Star rated by the TGCSA. In August 2009 the famous independent Klocke Book "The 100 most beautiful Hideaways Hotels of the World" stated Days at Sea as one of only three South African places.
Diners International awarded the wine cellar Platinum as exceeding expectations and British Airways gave an over all 9 of 10 possible points. The restaurant offers only market fresh products and a light Mediterranean cuisine. In the lounge area with some Café Del Mar style music our guests can relax with cocktails or health drinks and in the evenings concerts are projected onto a wall while a sky beamer is lightening up the breakers.
Christopher Lorenz' wonderful ceiling painting in the beauty and massage hut and the incredible sea view helps the therapist working out your shoulder problems while the monkeys and exotic birds are watching. There are many activities like golf, scuba diving, tennis, dolphin and whale watching, deep sea fishing, biking and hiking which can be arranged by our manager. Just tell us what you want. The lodge is a mere hour and 40 minutes south of Durban airport and you cannot miss it.
The gentle murmur of the Indian Ocean is a constant lullaby.
Here, close to the city of Durban in South Africa's "forgotten paradise", lies a true gem. Days at Sea - a luxury hotel with just 6 suites, is a hideaway in the true sense of the word, a refuge for lovers of nature, first-class cuisine and fine wine.
The European background of artist and photographer Dr. Guido Schoeldgen and his wife Annette, a fashion designer, is evident throughout. Clear-cut lines, refreshing pictures and sculptures with accompanying texts characterise the beachfront hotel.
Each suite is a world on its own, a masterpiece of design in exquisite shades of aqua blue. The spacious pool set over the ocean is illuminated at night. Above it are the restaurant and lounge with projected images and music ranging from Pavarotti to Café Del Mar.
The chef makes suggestions, the guests decide and then enjoy - fusion cuisine, a combination of Italy and France with a dash of Asia, "con-fusion cuisine" as Guido jokingly calls it.
The five-star boutique hotel is surrounded by three world-class golf courses - Wildcoast, San Lameer and Southbroom – and several leading game reserves, home to the "big five", are within driving distance.
