COW LANE COTTAGE
Self Catering Cottage/ House/ Bungalow Accommodation
in Rhodes, Wild Coast & Berg,
Eastern Cape, South Africa
We have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century! Cow Lane
Cottage has just been electrified…So now you can find a plug for your hair-dryer
and best of all, many ice cubes for a tinkling cooldrink!
It is still a very unusual, rewarding destination.
If you would enjoy staring up at a night sky so clear that you can see the Milky
Way; taking a tube ride down a real lazy river; showering under a waterfall;
hiking the most remote foothills of the Southern Berg and could cope with
temperatures of -15C in Winter and the resultant snowfalls - then you are likely
to enjoy what Cow Lane Cottage in the conservancy town of Rhodes has to offer.
This is rustic. Really basic stuff. You know, find the wood, chop it, make the
fire, boil the water then finally make supper... Only kidding - there is wood
and anthracite for fires and the luxury of electric blankets and heaters in
winter. A gas geyser and gas stove and electric fridge with the usual small
appliances make for easy living. Best of all though, you can now enjoy reading
until the wee hours…
It’s a real-life National Geographic experience. The cottage is a converted
coach house which was derelict when found. The town is big enough to stroll
around completely before supper and still be in time to watch the spectacular
sunset. There is a hotel, general dealer and mountains all around.
It is a place for children: the streets are untarred and traffic is negligible
(except on cattle-auction or sheep-shearing day) so bike rides to the river, the
low-level bridge or excursions to Tannie Hannelie's waterfall (the unofficial
local swimming pool) are called for. Take a backpack and hike up to the natural
lounge suite carved out of the sandstone by the mountain winds or follow the
goat-trail through the commonage.
It is a place for parents: the children will be safe and appear sporadically for
food, or to be more accurate, appear regularly for food. There is something
about this remote, primitive lifestyle which is governed by the rising and
setting of the sun that quickens the appetite.
It is a place for flyfishermen, bird watchers, mountain bikers, extreme marathon
runners, snow bunnies and wanna-be-snow-pro's.
Bring sunblock (you are more than 2500m above sea-level), very big jerseys in
winter and a sense of adventure...even if that means meeting up with one of the
cows that seem to enjoy mowing the lawn around the cottage.
Facilities:
2 bedrooms (each with double bed), one bathroom (bath only).
Iron day bed in lounge (forms 2 single beds)
Open-plan lounge with fire-place( a converted cooking pot)
Sun-lounge with window seats (forms 2 single beds)
Did I say...we now have electricity! O fabulous day!
