The Drakensberg is South Africa’s highest and most impressive mountain range,
rising to over 3 000 meters and the highest peaks are found in the Central
Drakensberg. The escarpment is frequently covered in snow in the winter months,
transforming the area into a picture-postcard winter wonderland. It is an area
which caters for the young as well as the not so young. A weekend of hiking and
climbing, with dips in the icy pools and rivers, goes a long way to restoring
those weary of city life. For others the attraction may be in trout fishing or
just relaxing with a good view of these wonderful mountains.
The Champagne Valley

Northern Drakensberg
features the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls, which is the second highest
waterfall in the world.
The mountains are home to 299 recorded bird species as well as to forest, scrub,
fynbos, savannah and mountain grassland, including a large number of species
listed in the Red Data Book of threatened plants, with 119 species listed as
globally endangered.
In the Northern Drakensberg be sure to book on the daily guided tours to
destinations such as Thonsela Cave, Cannibal Cavern and Echo Cave. Once your
energy levels are up and ready do take the hike to the top of the Amphitheatre,
another guided tour.
To spend a day on the summit of the Amphithetre, host to the world's second
highest waterfall and one of the most spectacular views, is a lifetime
experience. From the top of the Amphitheatre watch the water plunge more than
600 meters over the edge of the Mount-aux-Sources plateau in a spectacular
waterfall - the Tugela Falls, second highest waterfall in the world. And you
don't need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy all of this!
From Injesuthi, Central Drakensberg, other must do walks are the Battle Cave,
Rainbow Gorge, Blue Grotto, Cleo's Pool, to name but a few. Even the average
walker will be able to tackle these walks.
