One of the unknown treasures of the Southern Cape Coast is a quaint
and charming fishing village, renowned for its unspoilt coastline, exquisite
turquoise coloured sea and beautiful beaches.
Arniston was voted one of the
"Worlds Top Ten Hideaways" by Time magazine (May 1996). It has been named after
one of the many shipwrecks that took place off its coast. Arniston is also known
as Waenhuiskrans (wagon house cliff), which is a name derived from the
well-known tidal cave that one could visit in low tide. The cave itself is quite
breathtaking; one can sit for hours watching the tranquil waters lap against the
rocks.
From May to November, the famous Southern Right Whales grace the bay to mate and
calve in the warm waters.
Surrounding towns that are well worth a visit:
- Bredasdorp, the nearby centre of the Overberg that hosts authentic galleries,
craft shops, coffee houses and a maritime museum.
- Cape of L'Agulhas, the southern most tip of Africa.
- Swellendam, the historical town that is graced with some of the finest historic
Cape architecture.
Although Arniston is famed for the peace and tranquillity that one experiences
while staying there, there are plenty of act ivities for outdoor enthusiasts.
For the seafood lovers there are rock pools where you can collect oysters and
other delicious shellfish. You can also bargain with the local fishermen or get
out there yourself and catch a Steenbras, Galjoen or a mighty Mussel cracker.
Days may also be spent walking the nature trails of the nearby De Hoop Nature
Reserve, amusing oneself the sand dunes, and relaxing on the beach, swimming or
surfing. There is plen ty of bird life for the avid bird watchers. And for the
more relaxed holidaymaker, sundowners can be enjoyed from the deck of the house
or at the local hotel.
The house itself is right on the beach and offers one of the most spectacular
views in Arniston. During season, whale watching can be enjoyed at leisure from
the living room. The house is perfect for one or two families with children.

Directions from Cape Town:
- Take N2 towards George
- Turn off at Caledon (approx 120km)
- Follow R316 from Caledon to Napier
- Follow R316 from Napier to Bredasdorp
- Drive through Bredasdorp until reach end of road, follow signs to Arniston.
- Continue to the end of the road, pass campsite on right hand side. Turn right at
stop street into Harbour road.
- Follow road until you reach last house on right
hand side, number 28.
