Places Of Interest On The Way To Casas Delight
  • Quissico, is about 330km north of Maputo. It is well worth stopping at this bustling little one-street-town set high on a hill, commanding magnificent views of the beautiful freshwater lagoons, cut off from the sea by massive vegetation covered dunes.
  • Zavora, 18km after one crosses the bridge over the Poelela Lagoon where coral reefs forms a lovely sheltered lagoon, ideal for diving and snorkeling. Also known for its excellent game fishing.
  • Dive Sites Accessible From Barra, Island Rock, scuba dive on the largely unexplored reefs, visit an undersea cave or swim with the whale sharks that are often spotted here; Paindaine, famous for having some of the best inshore snorkeling in all of Mozambique. A spectacular 600m long inshore reef provides placid, protected conditions. In addition, the 30m seaside drop-off offers unlimited fishing and scuba diving opportunities with various caves, ledges and pinnacles being home to a wide variety of marine life; Jangamo , nearby pristine coral reefs, which include the world famous Manta Reef where sightings of the graceful manta rays are almost guaranteed. Dive operators in Barra cater for the beginner to the advanced diver, with dozens of sites readily accessible.
  • Inhambane, one of the earliest European settlements in Southern Africa. Looking more like a town than a city, the wide tree lined streets and elegant Portuguese architecture are reminders of a once prosperous past, based originally on the proceeds of gold, ivory and slavery. The city has grown old gracefully and is slowly recovering from civil war by becoming a service hub for the many nearby resorts as well as a destination of cultural and historical significance. It is the province's capital and has its own airport. This charming city has many places of general and historical interest with a visit to the harbour and local market a must. The bustling jetty has ocean going fishing vessels moored alongside and crowds of passengers are being ferried to and from Maxixe across the bay.
  • Tofo Beach, is about 17km east of Inhambane, Bar Babalaza marks the crossroads to Tofo and Barra. Tofino is known for its amazing surfing, although strong currents and a shallow rock shelf make it a place for advanced surfers only. Tofino is the site of the Frelimo Monument to Fallen Heroes, near to where unfortunate victims of the colonial period were thrown into a sea cave to be drowned by the rising tide. A smaller triangular monument on a hill just inland still holds some human bones recovered from this cave. Also to be seen is the display of raw power through a blow hole when there is a large swell running near the tip of the point.
  • Linga Linga, is at the end of the Peninsula about 7.5 km long, on the north side about 15km across the bay from Inhambane. It is the site of an old whaling station flanked by the sea on the one side and the bay on the other with easy access by boat from Inhambane. Linga Linga is known for its rich bird life and for the excellent fishing in the deep channel that passes it. An added attraction is the Dugongs which are sometimes seen here.
