BISHOPS COVE LODGE
Self Catering Cottage/ House/ Bungalow Accommodation
in Stormsriver / Tsitsikamma, Western Region,
Eastern Cape, South Africa
The Tsitsikamma with its ancient indigenous forests, lofty mountains, well
watered escarpment and rugged beautiful coastline is a magical part of the
renowned Garden Route. The area is sought after as a holiday destination by
nature lovers, adventure tourists and people just wanting to escape the hustle
and bustle of urban life.
Bishops Cove Lodge is situated on probably the most spectacular privately owned
coastal site in the Tsitsikamma. The lodge has breathtaking views of the wild
ocean and is surrounded by forested kloofs and fynbos. The view to the interior
is of lush pastures and mountains. The site is extremely private and tranquil
with no other buildings visible from the lodge as it is sited on a coastal
smallholding in a rural setting.
The architect designed lodge consists of two very comfortable self-contained
units. The one has two en-suite bedrooms, two bedrooms with separate bathrooms,
a loft with four beds, a large open plan living area dining room and kitchen,
and a large wrap around covered veranda. The second has two generous en-suite
bedrooms, an open plan living area, kitchen, and large covered deck. Both
kitchens are fully equipped - the former having a dishwasher as well. Both units
have access to a washing machine, tumble drier and braai facilities. Linen, bath
towels and blankets are provided. Although the units are designed for
self-catering, our friendly resident manager does offer B&B or fully catered
options provided this is arranged beforehand.
Immediately below the lodge is a rare, sheltered and private little beach with
rock pools. There are several walks and trails to explore. These include a short
walk to the forested stream in the kloof adjacent to the lodge, and a walk along
the cliff top where one can have excellent sightings of dolphins and whales. For
the more energetic there are two coastal trails where there is a good chance of
seeing resident Cape clawless otter and rare Oyster Catcher birds. Other
resident game includes bushbuck, steenbok, aardvark, rock hyrax, monkeys,
porcupine, bush-pig, caracal lynx and large-spotted genet. The abundance of
marine, forest, and grassland species of birds will please the avid bird
watcher. The Aasvoelkrans trail passes ancient stone fish traps (still
effective) in the intertidal zone which date back over 50000 years to the time
of the Khoisan people. Using rocks they created artificial tidal pools which
catch fish stranded by the ebbing tide.
The lodge guests have easy access to miles of quiet undulating farm and district
dirt roads which are ideal for mountain bikers. There are also several formal
biking and hiking trails nearby. For the adventure tourist there are several
activities within a reasonably short drive of the lodge. These range from bungy
jumping, Tree Top Canopy tours, Flying Fox Slide, scuba diving, snorkelling
trails, golf etc. Easy day drives will enable you to visit the historic farming
area of the Langkloof, the Tsitsikamma National Park, Monkey Land, Birds of
Paradise and the world famous surfing beaches of Cape St Francis and Jeffreys
Bay.
