Baleens is a small, privately owned Hotel situated close to Grotto Beach in the picturesque town of Hermanus. Hermanus is one of the most beautiful towns in South Africa, offering magnificent ocean vistas against a majestic mountain backdrop. Hermanus claims to have the best land based whale watching platform in the world from its elevated cliffs. From as early as May and June until late November, the bay (Walker Bay) teams with Southern Right Whales.
We are situated 6 kilometers from the town centre in Voelklip, one road from the beach and the lagoon. The suburb is dignified, quiet and peaceful; even in the height of the season. Grotto Beach is a Blue Flag beach and stretches for many miles, from the cliff paths towards Gansbaai. Town can be reached along a delightfully picturesque walk along the cliff paths. The lagoon is a paradise for bird watchers and flamingos are often seen.
Baleens Hotel has 21 rooms; all double, triple or family. Our aim is to provide the best possible value for money, nothing fussy. All the rooms are ensuite with showers and two have shower and bath. The sea facing rooms have a panoramic wide view of the bay. All the rooms have television and cable television is available in the public areas We encourage a relaxed atmosphere and the guests seem to particularly enjoy the informality. Children are welcome and we provide cots on request.
The Hotel is decorated with original artwork and interesting artefacts, mainly
of African origin.
A recent development is the opening of an A La Carte restaurant at Baleens, the
Salty Dog, operated independently by professional restaurateurs Gary and Ann
Hermanson. This is open in the evenings with a full bar. Many of our patrons
elect to spend the day exploring the region and the town, returning to the Hotel
in the evening for a drink and dinner.
In the morning, the guests often step out for an early walk or run on the beach
before breakfast. Breakfast is a freshly prepared simple English breakfast (eggs
and bacon), with cereals, yoghurt and a big fresh fruit salad.
Wifi is accessible in the lounges and there is a computer terminal for guests to
use free of charge.
We recently installed a swimming pool, which is solar heated. This is proving to
be very popular especially on warm evenings before dinner. There are braai
(barbeque) facilities by the pool. On cold evenings, a wood fire burning in the
lounge and the bar is most inviting. Guests can enjoy a game of pool.
There is a large conference and meeting room which is bright and airy. It can
comfortably seat 20 persons or more.
