The Antbear Guest House is situated in the foothills of the
Central Drakensberg near to Giants Castle National Park. Our home lies in the middle of a network of dirt roads where the traditional way of life is, for the time being, preserved. This guest house is an ideal place to base yourself while you discover the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu Natal South Africa. We invite you to spend time here and share some of our dreams. We like to think that the Antbear is a place for feeding your soul and rekindling your spirit. Built in the 1940's the quaint and charming cottage puts its arms around you and reminds you that there are things more important than everyday life.
The Antbear Guest House is a thatched, whitewashed cottage built high on a natural platform overlooking the Bushman's River and Giants Castle. This cottage is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 10 guests at a time. All our rooms have double beds and en-suite bath rooms. Each room is differently decorated with uniquely eccentric and artistic wooden furniture. One of the rooms has its own private lounge and fireplace, another has an a joining bedroom with 2 single beds ideal for accompanying kids. There is a lounge and dining-room for your exclusive use. But its our honeymoon suite with its own fireplace, view of the Drakensberg from the bed and its romantic flare that always first to be booked. That rustic country feeling has been kept without losing any comfort. Candles are used extensively for atmosphere, as are the fireplaces. It's a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste.
The name "Antbear" comes from its previous resident who lived under the floorboards before its restoration just a few years ago. It's filled with gorgeous hand crafted furniture, wonderful wooden sculptures and a seemingly never ending collection of artistic aspects to discover.
Our meals are the real reason to stop over. Plan for slow and decadent dinners by candlelight prepared by your hosts Andrew and Conny. Sometimes it's a Moroccan spread including a genuine Moroccan tagine prepared on wood coals or maybe it's a surprise of just how delightful Chinese food can be. Breakfast is served with freshly baked bread and scones and eggs any way you can imagine them. Often breakfast becomes a 2 hour affair. We cater for vegetarians, lean heavily on our organic vegetable garden and if you have a special request try us we're probably game.
There is plenty to do in the area too. Walks in the Drakensberg mountains, visits to bushman paintings, horse trails though a private game reserve, canoe trips, golfing, trout fishing, white water rafting, canopy tours, battlefield tours and the
Midlands Meander to mention but a few. We assist our guests with bookings of activities and will gladly recommend something that will suite you.
