The Underberg Studio
Arts & Crafts
in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
The
Southern Drakensberg and is a real haven for art lovers.
The
Underberg Studio is a gallery and working studio specialising in Fine Art Photography and Ceramics. The business is owned by two artists, Lawrance and Catherine Brennon. Lawrance is a fine art landscape photographer, while Catherine is a ceramic artist and potter. The gallery was set up primarily to exhibit their own work but also includes the work of more than 30 other selected South African ceramists and photographers such as Hennie Meyer, Donve Branch, Clementina van der Walt, Karen Sinovich, Martha Zettler, John Shirley, Marlene Neumann, Glen Green, Heather Mills, Shelley Maisel, Bob Cnoops and others. All the work on show is available for sale.
Lawrance Brennon's area of expertise is in large panoramic images of the South African landscape, and the Drakensberg in particular. The images reflect the many moods of the mountains and often capture the dramatic light after storms or at dawn. Lawrance's work is available framed or unframed and is specially packaged for easy transport.
Visitors to the gallery are welcome to come into the studio area to see Catherine at work. Many of her fine earthenware pieces make use of impressed antique lace and there is often work in progress to be seen. The ceramic studio also offers Raku workshops from time to time along with regular pottery classes for adults. No previous experience is needed in order to participate.
The Underberg Studio is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm, Sundays from 10:30am to
1:30pm. Closed on Tuesdays (except by appointment).
