Abu Madi Game Reserve is a private BIG FIVE game reserve located in the very heart of Zululand,
Mkuze. The ranch is easily accessible
being only 7km from the N2 highway at the Mkuze intersection. We are a three and a half hours drive from Durban en route to Swaziland and
Kruger national park, and six hours from Johannesburg.
Abu Madi is an ideal stop-over to Mozambique as well.
The BIG FIVE reserve lies within the
Zululand Rhino Reserve and is conveniently located to some of South Africa's finest wildlife conservation areas and national parks.
Daily excursions can be undertaken to Umfolozi /
Hluhluwe National Park, Mkuze
National Park and also Phongola National Park on the banks of the Josini Dam.
Abu Madi boasts a rich diversity of wild animals and is a sanctuary for the
endangered black rhino, also white rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and
cheetah as well as
a wide variety of other wildlife and a diversity of birdlife, with birders
having recorded 310 different species of birds. A booklet on the Birds of Abu Madi and a tree guide are helpful manuals available at the office. Game drives
can be arranged with management in an open game viewing vehicle.
The Lodge complex which is serviced daily consists of three separate units under
thatch. The main lodge has a fully equipped kitchen, lounge, dining room,
enclosed front porch and can sleeps 10 in 3 bedrooms. There is a separate large
rondavel that has a double bed, single bed with bathroom and kitchen en suite
located in close proximity of the swimming pool in a shady garden and a square
rondavel that has two single beds and bathroom and kitchen en suite. All units
are in close proximity to the boma.
Guests can experience a true "out of Africa" experience in the bushcamp which
has three bedrooms with 2 single beds in each, a fully equipped kitchen and
dining facilities, with a boma in close proximity to enable guests to braai and
have their meals around a roaring fire under the African stars. The flush
toilets and gas showers are found in a semi-open reeded environment where one
can watch the animals on their way to the water hole, which is directly in front
of the camp giving the visitors also the opportunity to sit on their verandah
quietly observing the animals and abundant birdlife coming to drink throughout
the day. There are also campsites available and firewood can be purchased in
camp.
Memorable evenings can be spent around the fire in the reed boma under the star
lit sky to the night sounds of jackals, hyenas and night jars. Every evening
many different porcupine come to the lodge looking for food. One will let
visitors feed her and even stroke her quills. They are a definate firm favourite
with all visitors, young and old alike.
